Big Woods Community
This small burying ground is located on a quarter acre portion of the tract purchased in 1846 by Rev. Elijah Awkard, a free Black minister in the antebellum era. Before the Civil War, he became one of the largest Black land owners in Montgomery County, Maryland. The nearby Methodist Church in the Jerusalem community is named after him, Elijah's Rest M. E. Church, and his descendants continue to live in the county. The cemetery is one of the more important sites related to the history of free Blacks in Montgomery County.

The Awkard home is no longer standing and the only remains of the family is the small cemetery. There were upright gravestones for the parents and horizontal markers for the children.

The cemetery is no longer maintained and the gravestones have been knocked over.

The current name for the church that is named for Rev. Elijah Awkard that appears on Findagrave is the Elijah United Methodist Church.
