Alter Nordfriedhof (Old North Cemetery), also known as Alter Nördlicher Friedhof (Old Northern Cemetery) is located in the Maxvorstadt section of Munich. The cemetery opened in 1868, but was closed for further burials in 1939 when there was discussion of joining Isabella- and Luisenstrasse, both of which stopped at the cemetery's western end (see map below). This plan was luckily defeated, but the bombings of the Second World War damaged the cemetery so severely that it was closed for good in 1944.
During its active period, the cemetery had a total of about 62,000 interments, of which approximately 800 remain today, many without a monument. The Alter Nordfriedhof is now a public park and a cultural monument.
