THE HISTORY OF CLINTON AND FRANKLIN COUNTY by Duane Hamilton Hurd first published in 1880 lists the town of Clinton on page 299 as the town forming the "northwest corner " of Clinton County. Bordering it on the north is Quebec. It is bounded on the south by Ellenburg. To the east you will find Mooers. Chateaugay is on the west. All are listed as being a part of Clinton County prior to 1799, but it became township # 6 of "the Old Military Tract" and given the name Clinton in legislature passed May 14, 1885.

In the names of the settlers is found Marcus Bitgood and his wife, Almira Emery Bitgood. This was changed to BIDGOOD on the stone Woody McLellan found in the old Frontier cemetery on the Rube Smith farm . Of it, Mr McLellan wrote "This abandoned cemetery was indicated to us by Mr Elmer Caron, of Champlain. It is on the Rube Smith farm, on the north side of the road, wll behind the buildins, and entirely overgrown."
