Located at 3320 Boxwood Drive, just east of McFarland Road, between Southport & Stop 11 Roads in Southport, Indiana.
Flanked by 2 houses, the formerly abandoned Featherston Cemetery sits on a half-acre and is surrounded by a chain-link fence. Only one tombstone remains, but five people are known to have been buried there.
The graveyard, which dates back before the Civil War, is being preserved and will be protected.
The cemetery held its first burial in the 1830's.
Mr. Featherston erected a cabin and barn on his property, and built his first log cabin church, known as Little Buck Creek Baptist. The first service was held there in May 1832 and later evolved into Southport Baptist.
Thanks to Bob Alloway, whose hobby is cleaning up pioneer burial grounds and restoring headstones. He has been working on the cemetery with others for several years.
