"Sweden", the estate of Colonel Peterson Goodwyn, was one of several large properties owned by members of the Goodwyn family of Dinwiddie County.
The Goodwyn family cemetery enclosed by a thick granite stone wall is about all that is left of the original estate that is said to have totaled several thousand acres and was a part of a land grant to Colonel Peterson Goodwyn's father, Joseph Goodwyn, from King George of England. In an article appearing under the title "Notes on Southside Virginia" under the heading Dinwiddie County, the author visited "Sweden" in 1909 and wrote that the house, a long, rambling, large old fashioned building, is now untenanted and on its last legs. The graveyard, enclosed by a thick stone wall, is 150 yards north of the dwelling and contains many graves and a large stone vault.
Many of those buried at "Sweden" are without headstones. But by Bible records and other sources, many of those buried there without headstones are known. The headstones that remain have been vandalized on several occasions and many are unreadable due to age, exposure to the elements, and sustained damage through the years. "Sweden" is the burial location of Colonel Peterson Goodwyn, Revolutionary War Colonel, member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, 1789-1802; elected as a Democrat to the Eighth and to seven succeeding Congresses of the United States and served from 4 March 1803 until his death at his home, "Sweden", in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, on 21 February 1818, followed by burial in the family cemetery there.
