The first Methodist Church in Hamilton was constructed near this site in 1847. It was destroyed by fire in the early part of the War Between the States. A second church building was built in 1861 in the lot next to this cemetery. In 1901, this building was dismantled because it was being undermined by a cave-in. The next Methodist Church was built on Front Street; it was completed in 1903.

The cemetery is located at the intersection of East Liberty Street and North Railroad Street. It now stands in a group of trees, and no church is on the property today. Most of the people who are buried here died before 1900; many headstones are illegible or nearly so.

In at least one recent cemetery survey of the Hamilton township, the Hamilton town cemetery and this cemetery were erroneously assumed to be the same cemetery, so all names for both cemeteries were listed under Hamilton Methodist Church, cemetery #510. However, an older survey taken in the 1970s has separate listings for both cemeteries. The 1970s survey, and headstone photos, provide the basis for the memorials added here.
