Location: Sapelo Island. The exact location of this cemetery is unknown at the present time (prior to 2000).
History: According to oral history this was the original slave graveyard on Sapelo Island and, probably, dates from the French occupation in the 1790s. Records show that the Sapelo Company owned, jointly, fifteen slaves in 1793 (source 2). Time and hurricanes have obliterated much evidence from this time period. Cornelia Bailey of Sapelo Island knows the approximate location and we still hope to find this ancient burial ground.
