History: Francis Levett, Sr. owned land on the Georgia Coast prior to the Revolutionary War. He was a Loyalist and went to East Florida in 1769. He had a plantation on the St. John's River called Julianton, named for his wife. They left East Florida in 1785 and were in Jamaica and the Bahamas. Frances Levett, Jr. and his family were in McIntosh County by 1787 and established Julianton Plantation, named for his mother, Juliana Levett. It is uncertain as to whether the property had belonged to his father prior to the Revolutionary War or was acquired by him in 1787. He was one of the first to plant Sea Island cotton, probably bringing the seeds with him from the Bahamas. Francis Levett, Jr. and his wife, Charlotte, had two children. A daughter, Charlotte Julia was born in 1783 and married Rev. Thomas Bennett in England. The son, John Levett, was born in 1787, perhaps at Julianton Plantation. Francis Levett, Jr. died in 1802. His widow married William Stephens of Savannah. The plantation was held in trust for John. He returned from England to Julianton in 1807 to take over the plantation but he died and was buried there the next year. His mother and, after her death in 1841 in England, his sister's son, William H. Bennett, continued the cultivation of Julianton Plantation until it was sold to Edward W. Delegal in 1866. (source 2). There are memorial stones but whether on the original graves is uncertain. They are adjacent to three U.S. Geodetic monuments, marked "Thorpe 1933".
