(The Joel B. Hayes Cemetery is marked "Cem" on the USGS Topographical Maps, Lake View SC Quadrangle, but the name is not shown on the maps. As a result of extensive documentation, this cemetery was recently accepted and added to the GNIS database where it may now be found as the Joel B. Hayes Cemetery, with a variant name of Hayes. )

The Joel B. Hayes Cemetery, also known as the Hayes Cemetery, is located on Lovelle Road, south of Lake View, SC, on lands that belonged to Joel B. Hayes and across Lovelle Road from his home that burned down long ago. The land is still owned and resided on by his descendants.

Joel B. Hayes's maternal great grandfather, David Brewer, purchased this land about 1800 when he first arrived in old Marion District from Johnston County, NC. The land passed from David to his son, Asa Brewer, who made an 1857 deed for the land to his six year old grandson, Joel B. Hayes (Marion County Deed Book Y page 35).

Older Brewer and Hayes descendants have told me the hilltop was once covered with wooden markers, now long gone. One Brewer descendant attended the funeral of her great uncle, George Brewer here, and heard as a child there were older Brewer burials here - indicating this was probably the old Brewer Cemetery.

I have included ALL the markers in the cemetery, plus two unmarked burials; George Brewer was confirmed to me by his niece, who attended his funeral, and by his death certificate. Joseph Hayes is confirmed by his death certificate.

The tombstone inscriptions were copied by me in 1984. Many years ago I placed a copy of this survey on the Dillon County SC Genweb website. No other surveys of the cemetery are known to me.

Directions: Going out of Lake View toward Nichols on Hwy #9, go 3/10 mile to Fordtown Road (SR277). Turn right and go 4/10 mile to Lovelle Road (SR484). Turn left and go 4/10 miles. Cemetery is in the field on the left, on the crest of the hill under the old cedar tree. The old field road to the cemetery has been plowed over since the cemetery was surveyed. (And the cedar tree at the markers has been cut down since I wrote this description.)
