"At the eastern limits of Boonville, just north, at the foot of the steeply sloping hill, where once was held the Old State Fair... at the western enclosure of the fortifications built by Gen. Nathaniel Lyon, stood the little windows, panels and ceilings, the names of soliders from Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin. At the eastern end remained the huge burial mound, built many years before by David Lilly, with white slabs yet resting sbove the dust of several members of his family."
