This cemetery has roots back to 1849 when William Collins set aside two acres from his farm for a cemetery and Catholic Church. The first burial was Charles McCafferty in 1857 but there could have been others before. I would imagine that William Collins and his wife are buried here although there are no stones for either of them. William died in 1850. The Collins Family plot is surrounded by a barnstone wall and has five depressions but a marker for only two people. This is probally where William and his wife are buried as well. The Catholic Church operated at this site until the turn of the century. Its not known why it closed but ashes found in the old church footprint seem to suggest the church burned. Other interesting aspects of this cemetery is that it once had a rubble wall surrounding the main part of the cemetery. Outside this wall of sorts are probally several dozen unmarked burials as indicated by rough stone markers and ground depressions. During the flu epidemic of 1918, flu victims were buried here. My great grandfather told me that he was paid once to bury two people who were found dead in the streets of some town nearby. Another story (not verified) is that a preacher and his wife were passing through the region and their child got sick and died. For some reason they were not allowed to use the cemetery and instead buried the child across North Washington Road at the intersection of Basswood Road.
The cemetery is hard to find since it is hidden by thick brush and forest. When leaving Fairview towards North Washington, once you pass the first bridge (about .5 miles out of town) you will keep going up a hill and in about .25 miles there will be a small grass field on the left in which you can park. The cemetery is just 20 yards into the forest across the road.
