Search Abbey of Saint Fursy:

Built in 658, as a tomb for Saint Fursy. Charles the Simple, King of France, deposed and imprisoned in Péronne in 923, was buried here in 929. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1130. The chapter of canons was dispersed in 1790 , and the collegiate church of Saint-Fursy demolished in 1794. The relics of Saint Fursy were preserved in the south chapel dedicated to him, of the nearby Church of St. John the Baptist, but they disappeared in 1918. During the 2003 excavations at the church site, human bones were found, assumed but not proven to be those of Charles the Simple.
