Originally a small 12th century chapel and graveyard set aside for the Knights Hospitaller, given by Maurice FitzGerald to the Franciscans in the 13th century. Suppressed in 1536, the site into ruins after 1649. During the 1700s, the Franciscan order in Wexford regained ownership of the friary, and it became and remained the parish church of Wexford until 1858. Major repairs were undertaken between 1984 and 1987.
