This location was consecrated for use as a burial ground for St Helen parish in September of 1745. The parish had sold their Churchyard to the York City Corporation to allow for the opening of a street connection between Blake Street and Davygate. The original St Helen Churchyard is now covered by paving stones and other urban development, mostly under St Helen’s Square. The replacement burial ground on Davygate became available when the City Corporation demolished Davy Hall. It originally measured 30 by 40 sq ft but has also been truncated by street and urban expansion. All churchyards and burial grounds within the York city boundaries were permanently closed to new burials by parliamentary order in December 1854. At some point, St Helen Davygate Church Cemetery was bricked over and the few existing headstones were placed along the walls. Monuments located within the parish church building (located adjacent to the original Churchyard) that date from 1745 will generally commemorate individuals buried in the St Helen Church Cemetery. Burial registers for St Helen parish cover the period 1568 to 1852. These have been deposited with the Borthwick Institute for Archives, University of York, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD.
