Gaines Old Pioneer Cemetery is an abandoned, small family plot used by the pioneer Mattison family. The Mattison family took up cutting virgin forest timber along Pine Creek and Elk Run near Gaines and Watrous, Tioga County, PA. Four graves are arranged as side by side shallow depressions facing east and west. Four stones have been read in the past, but only three are visible. They are displaced from their original location. Local rumor is other graves may exist, though no depressions of the appropriate dimension are seen in the immediate area. The cemetery is not on the road, marked, or maintained.
To find the cemetery, drive west on US RT 6 from its intersection with PA RT 349 in Gaines, Tioga County, PA, about 300 feet to the first unmarked gravel/dirt road on the right (north side of US RT 6). The road curves to the left and a field appears on the right. After passing one house on the left, a hunting camp at the end of the gravel/dirt road is seen on the right. From the driveway of the hunting camp, follow the boundary of the hunting camp property on the left and the State Game Lands planted field on the right, and go back to the north about 330 feet to the back right (northeast) corner of the hunting camp land. The graves are just across the line on state game land. Access should be with knowledge of the hunting camp owners when they are present.
