Walnut Street South in the town of Harrow now part of the town of Essex; Township of Colochester South; Essex County; Ontario; Canada.
This cemetery is all that remains of the former Harrow Snake Lane Black Pioneer Community. This site was used as a religious camp meeting site starting in the mid 1800's by the local African Canadian community, many of whom were escaped slaves from the U.S. Those buried here and their descendants have made valuable contributions to every facet of Canadian life as religious leaders, entertainers and entrepreneurs. Eventually a church was built immediately north of where this
cemetery sits and was used up until the mid 20th century when it was torn down.
Burials began here in the mid 19th century but seem to have abruptly halted in the 1880's. This cemetery deteriorated into a poor state of repair and most of the stones were moved and broken until a restoration campaign began in 2001.
A 2004 Archeological assessment revealed many more burials than there are headstones. Many of the burials were in systematic rows but others appear to be rather hap hazard. The southwest corner of the cemetery was found to contain the remains of infants and small children. The only grave we know for certain is marked by the headstone that belongs with it is that of Olivia Ellen Moore in the southeast corner. The rest of the stones were matched to graves using educated guess work. This cemetery is historically significant to the Town of Harrow and County of Essex and is an important part of Canada's history.
This plaque was made possible by the financial assistance of The Questers Border City Branch # 1369 as well as the Provincial Questers organization andthe Essex County Historical Cemeteries Preservation Society. Erected Spring 2007.
