The original Fort Laramie Post Cemetery dates to the time the when the fort was owned by Sublette and Campbell and the American Fur Company. It had been used until ca. 1867. In 1873, a post hospital was built over the old cemetery and during the construction six graves were found within the lines of construction. These remains were moved to a nearby cemetery. A cemetery was established adjacent to the new post hospital and burials continued for a period of time. On July 13, 1891 a project was undertaken to move the locatable burials (including the six previously disinterred) to Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Nebraska.
At present, there are two graves remaining in the Old Fort Laramie Post Cemetery, which contain the remains of soldiers that died of smallpox. It was decided to leave the graves of John J. Boston and Stace A. Lassell undisturbed in fear of releasing the disease.
