Pyynikki Church Park (Pyynikin kirkkopuisto) functioned as a cemetery between 1785 and late 1880's. At the time there was no church in the area. Alexander Church was built in the park as late as 1880.
The first City Gardener of Tampere, Karl Johan Gauffin, planned the park (at the time called Alexander Church Park) and the first trees were planted there in 1813. The renovation of the Church Park started in 1898.
Although the old cemetery has functioned as a park for over a hundred years, there are still many old memorials left. During the civil war 1918 beside the church was dug an unnamed mass grave, where several victims of war, disease and famine were buried.
