This single grave is locally rumored to be that of Henry Marion Smith (1812-1885), who moved to a homestead about 0.7 miles east-northeast of this site in about 1879 with his second wife and family, and who died near here in 1885. The grave's occupant cannot be fully confirmed, though, since the gravestone is unclear, it was found prior to 2001 as several pieces scattered about the ground, and this site was never owned by the Smith family. Further details can be found in Report 129 by Prewitt & Associates of Austin, entitled "Cultural Resources Survey Of Selected Maneuver Areas At Camp Bullis, Bexar and Comal Counties, Texas: The Archaeology and History of 3,255 Acres Along Cibolo Creek" (April 2001), especially pages 47-53 and 119-127. For many years, this location has been on a largely-undeveloped and wooded parcel owned by the U.S. Government as the northwestern corner of Camp Bullis. Unlike most of the camp (which is in Bexar County), this site is north of Cibolo Creek (thus in southwestern Comal County). The gravestone was apparently re-assembled, restored and fenced at some point between 2001 and 2008. Some photos at Henry's memorial display a historical and biographical plaque, which is actually located elsewhere at the Smith Cemetery in Kendall County just north of Bergheim, named after and containing the graves of Henry's son William (1847-1928) and his family.
