The Victorian Church of St John the Baptist, Swalecliffe, lies overlooking the sea across a popular green space, at the far end of a modern housing estate. It was designed by Robert Wheeler of Brenchley, a noted Victorian architect, to be built on the same site as a previous 12th century church, demolished in 1875 because of its dilapidated state. Nothing remains inside of the Saxon church; the interior is of polychrome brick, light, colourful and charming, with a massive marble pulpit and a stained glass window by C E Kempe & Co. to the south in memory of a soldier who died in World War One. The churchyard is neat and well-kept, and as the paths make convenient access points to the green there are frequent passers-by in fine weather, and sunbathers and picnickers on the other side of the rustic fence.
