The Diocese of Lansing

The Brophy Road Cemetery, formerly known as the Cemetery of St. James Catholic church, is owned and maintained by St. John Catholic Church. The original Catholic Church in this area was named under the patronage of St. James. However as transitions were made from the Diocese of Detroit to the Diocese of Lansing, St. James was renamed to St. John Catholic Church. When the historic orange brick Church of St. John the Baptist was built on the corner of M-59 and Hacker Road on June 24, 1909. Many of the graves from Brophy Road Cemetery were transferred to the new cemetery surrounding the historic Church. Many of the original graves, however, still remain in the Brophy Road Cemetery. Though records and information are scarce, it is of that this cemetery also contains "Depression Graves," graves of people who died during the Era of the Great Depression. Graves were dug under the veil of evening's darkness and a person's remains were simply placed in the hand-dug grave without the marking of a tombstone.

Original rows in the cemetery are arranged from North to the South. After years of environmental erosion, only a few names are visible on the grave markers. As you visit this cemetery, it is interesting to note the ages of the people who died and are buried here.
