William Jenkins of South Carolina came to Talladega County in the Fall of 1835 and had an Ionic style home built with handmade brick on 4,700 acres of land. The cemetery on the site dates back to 1837 and was listed in "Talladega County, Alabama Tombstone Inscriptions of All Known Cemeteries 1700's-1987", Volume I, c. 1989 by Joseph W. and Francis S. Upchurch. In their 1984 survey there were twenty graves identified here, with the only unmarked one being that of William Jenkins, Jr. (1797-1866).
Partial epitaph transcriptions were taken from "Early Tombstone Record of Talladega County, Alabama", c. 1973 by Carolyn Lane Luttrell, and headstone photographs. The 425-word epitaph inscription of Mourning Catherine Jenkins Lawler (1818-1839) was quoted by Ms. Luttrell in its entirety.
The current property owner, a past president of the Talladega County Historical Association, and her late husband acquired "Cedar Grove" in 1967.
