John DeMott, in his transcription of this burying ground published in the Somerset County Historical Quarterly, Volume 3, 1914, noted that this was one of three burying grounds located along the Easton Turnpike (now Easton Avenue) between New Brunswick and Bound Brook, on the south side of the Raritan River (the other two he was referring to were the Smalley's Farm Burying Ground 1/3 of a mile to the southeast on a neighboring farm and the Taylor Farm Burying Ground farther to the northwest near the Cedar Grove road).
Mr. DeMott indicated that at that time the burying ground was part of the Floyd Wells farm. The farm was located adjacent to the Delaware and Raritan Canal between the Raritan River to the northeast, Easton Avenue to the southwest, DeMott Lane to the southeast and Willow Avenue to the northwest.
The burying ground is currently part of the Rutgers Preparatory School campus. Rutgers Prep was established in 1766 and until 1957 was affiliated with Rutgers University (originally called Queen's College). Like the University, Rutgers Prep was originally located nearby in the city of New Brunswick but after becoming independent, Rutgers Prep sought a new location for their school. When the 35 acre Wells estate that included a 22-room mansion and the burying ground was put up for sale in December 1957, Rutgers Prep acquired it and has remained there to this day, expanding the school over the years.
