"Ancient, Hidden Cemetery Discovered in Bernalillo" 2010
This old cemetery was recently "re-discovered" south of Hwy 550 in Bernalillo. On Google maps, it is called "Bernalillo Cemetery." (A different, much larger cemetery - Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery - in Bernalillo, Sandoval, NM is visible from Hwy 25. That cemetery is also often called Bernalillo Cemetery, but is not the same as Perea Cemetery.)
This was the Perea family cemetery, which included other family names, such as Castillo. There is a transcription of names found in this cemetery and photographs of headstones in the New Mexico Genealogical Society Newsletter(Nov. issue, 1994). http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nma/bernalillo/beperea.htm
Many of the headstones have since been destroyed, but locations can be determined by the gravestone bases that are still there.
The Pereas were important figures in territorial New Mexico, several of them involved in government. Pedro Perea was a delegate and large landowner who raised sheep in Sandoval County. He raised taxes skyhigh for the railroad to dissuade them from coming through Bernalillo, because he was afraid the tracks would cut through his ranch. This act may have been responsible for the growth of Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, instead of Bernalillo.
As can be seen in the photo, the Railrunner commuter passenger train (Los Lunas to Santa Fe)now stops in Bernalillo.
