Getting there:
From Riga city center, take tram 11 toward Mezaparks/Ezermalas iela. Get off at the Bralu kapi stop. When you get off, look behind you and to the left. You will see a street going to the right lined with flower vendor stalls - this is Aizsaulies iela and you can see the central gate and entrance to Bralu kapi at the far end.
Bralu kapi is located in the north-eastern part of Riga, 5 km from city center and is an area of 9 hectors (22.24 acres) which abuts Meza kapi on its right and Raina kapi on its left.
The Riga City Council received a request on 26 September 1914 to set aside burial grounds, which could later form a separate cemetery, for soldiers killed in action during World War I. The first burials took place on 15 October, 1915.
The cemetery is a memorial to and burial ground for thousands of Latvian soldiers who were killed between 1915 and 1920 in World War I and the Latvian War of Independence. It also contains, as reburials, a number of graves of Latvians killed during World War II and of holders of the Lâèplçsis War Order
From 1924 to 1936, the cemetery went through various phases of development with placement of statues, walls and other architectural designs. Among many of the persons who participated are sculptors Karlis Zale, J. Cirulis and F. Valdmanisby; the architects P. Feders, A. Birzenieks, P. Kundzins; the landscape gardener Andrejs Zeidaks.
