St James Church was consecrated on December 31, 1840. It was apparently the completion of a promise made by Lieutenant Edward Charles Close to his God that, should he survive the Spanish Peninsular War, he would construct a church. His son Edward Close, 13 years old, laid the foundation stone in 1837. At the age of 51 years Edward re-laid the same stone in 1875, after the 1874 fire.
The church is made of locally quarried sandstone and handmade bricks. Modifications to the building were made in the 1860's. Fire decimated part of the original church in 1874 and a significant architect of the time, John Horbury-Hunt oversaw restorations, modifications and repair work. In the 1989 Newcastle earthquake, further damage occurred to the church and strengthening was added to the walls during reconstruction.
There are no headstones or graves located on the site of St James Church. There is only the columbarium at the rear of the church. After a funeral at the church, most of the early interments occurred in the Morpeth Cemetery approximately 1.5 km away. Cremation in Newcastle only began in 1936. While most of the plaques at St James are for deaths much later than that, there are a few of the early cremations.
The columbarium is located at the rear of the church building. It is built in the shape of a square U and has a garden bed in the centre where ashes may be interred.
NB: Some of the interments at St James columbarium also have listings on the Newcastle Memorial Park (the local crematorium) website.
