Beechmont Cemetery

The cemetery opened in 1895 along what was known then as Conduit Rd. (MacArthur Blvd now). The final disposition of the cemetery remains unknown today. The Evening Star in January of 1896 reported that it was about 211 acres in size (which is double what Rock Creek and Cedar Hill are by comparison). The article also said it had a 1/2 mile of frontage along Conduit Road. It's location was said to be about 1 1/2 miles above the Cabin John Bridge. The cemetery owners were trying to get a stop at the cemetery with the planned new electric railroad which was to pass within a few hundred feet of the main entrance. And a special funeral car to be used for funerals - they were some 9 miles from the cit line and felt this was the best option then for funerals there. When the Old Presbyterian graveyard in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. was ordered to shut down in the late 1800s, it was also told to remove all graves as well. Some of the deceased were known to have been reburied in this cemetery. The article pointed out that some 30 lots had been sold and over 12 burials had taken place already despite the remoteness and new circumstances of the grave yard.
