Site Plaque Transcription -
Welcome to Old Bathgate Parish Church, Kirkton, Bathgate. A site of historic interest and culture which dates back to around 1220 AD.

This ruinous church with medieval walls, consolidated in 1846, comprises of a single chamber measuring 27.3 metres in length by 5.85 metres [sic] wide. The masonry is mainly rubble, with an admixture of ashlar, which has emanated from such earlier buildings. Original features are the North door joints with worn capitals c. 1200 and one small lancet at the East end of the structure. Some of the more interesting memorials are to be found around the walls of the structure with one in particular for A. Crighton of Drumcarse that dates back to the 16th century. A tombstone that lies within 9 metres of the South church wall from the 17th century of particular interest is that dedicated to James Davie. This tombstone is referred to as the "Covenantors" stone which vividly describes his death and religious belief at that time.

The old church manse "Spring Grove" is still used and can be seen at the corner of the N.N.W. wall. These church ruins are now scheduled by the Secretary of State for Scotland, which is significant in being recognized as a national asset.
