The "cemetery" is really two cemeteries. The "new" cemetery is close to and behind the old church building on Highway 206 (the "High Road") in Arichat. The "old" cemetery is to the east of a gully that runs north/south alongside the eastern edge of the "new" cemetery. It is accessed by a dirt road just east of the parking lot of the old church on Highway 206 in Arichat.
While the "new" cemetery is reasonably well-maintained, a number of stones have fallen over or have disappeared. The "old" cemetery was neglected for many years. Only a fraction of the stones remain standing or visible in what is now a highly wooded area with lots of underbrush. A group of local volunteers has been working to open up the "old" cemetery. It is now reasonably accessible (a short walk from the main road of Highway 206) and a lovely place to visit.
The Anglican Parish of St. John's was started in 1825, with its first Church opening in 1828. At the time, it was the second Protestant Church on Cape Breton Island. The current building replaced the original Church in 1895. The earliest burials are found in the "old" cemetery which, some evidence suggests, may have been used as a Protestant burial ground before 1825. However, no burial records before 1828 exist.
The information for a large number of memorials for this cemetery has come from burial records. Many stones are missing.
