Sherman Homestead Cemetery (Sandgate)

Sherman Homestead Cemetery is an early cemetery on private land on the east side of the Rupert Rd. in Sandgate just north of the West Rd. The location is high up above the valley & rather remote even today. The Morehouse, Sherman, & Phillips families migrated here from Western CT & Western MA after the Revolution. All 19 of the Phillips family in the 1790 census of New Milford, Ct. were identified as "others". The Pioneer History of Medina Co. Ohio by N B Northrop (1861- p. 182) identifies Augustus Phillip's father & mother from CT as colored people descending from King Phillip. http://genealogysurnames.net/Phillips.htm
Phillips is a surname recognized by the Stockbridge Mahican as one of their own. The Stockbridge Mahican were close allies of Ethan Allen. The Republic of VT gave the town of Marshfield in 1785 to the Stockbridge Mahican because they supplied a company of warriors at the Battle of Bennington.
