The Gothic church was built under the direction of Alexander, Count of Pfalz-Zweibrücken (1462-1514) after he returned from a crusade in 1489. The church was designed and built by Philip Steinmetz, beginning in 1493. It is the oldest church structure in the city of Zweibrücken in the German State of Rheinland-Pfalz. Members of some local aristocratic families are buried in the vaults underneath the church. The building was destroyed in World War II, but rebuilt and re-opened in 1955. It is now used by the Lutheran Congregation of Zweibrücken.
