Melk Concentration Camp
Melk, Melk Bezirk, Lower Austria, Austria
Established: January 11, 1944.
Liberated: May 5, 1945.
Estimated number of victims: Aprox. 10,000 (not including the unknown number who were killed in the tunnels).
Melk Concentration camp was a sub-camp of Mauthausen. Its purpose was to provide slave labor for tunneling projects in the surrounding hills. Many prisoners were buried alive while working in the fine sand and quartz tunnels.
Melk had its own gas chamber and crematorium with a tall smokestack an obvious landmark. It operated within full view of the civilian population. Nothing was done to conceal the stench and atrocities.
The Commandant of Melk was Julius Ludolf. It is also known that at some period the infamous Untersturmbannfûhrer Anton Streitwieser held command. The construction works were under the supervision of Obergruppenfûhrer Kammler and Obersturmfûhrer Schulz. Julius Ludolf was hanged in April of 1947. Streitwieser, Kammler and Schulz managed to escape.
