It's managed by the Bavarian Castles, Gardens and Lakes Administration.
From May 1945 until about 1956 there was a hospital for displaced persons in Gauting located in what used to be the German Airforce Lung Hospital. People infected with tuberculosis from 30 nations were treated here after the war, mainly survivors of local concentration camps. Many of them Jews. Mortality rates were high during the first post war months, but with the aid of American medications many survived. A new Jewish cemetery was created by the town of Gauting for the about 150 Jewish citizen that had died in that hospital. It's remained an active cemetery with the last burials taking place in 1998. 172 burials have been documented, some remains have been re-interred in other cemeteries.
The main gate at Planegger Strasse is usually locked, but there is an access way through the municipal cemetery right next door: Waldfriedhof Gauting. Enter the municipal cemetery through its main gate, walk down the road, turn right (or south) and find the gate into the Jewish cemetery right next to the large monument.
