Pioneer Cemetery Park is now a small municipal park located at the prominent intersection of Wallace Street and Comox Road just north of the downtown core.
This cemetery served Nanaimo during its early years, with the first known burial in 1853 to the final burial in 1895. It speaks to the communities earliest development and is a valuable record of the lives of Nanaimo's first European settlers.
In 1953 the city of Nanaimo became concerned with the overall dilapidation of the cemetery and with many headstones falling apart or gone. There were hundreds of people buried at the cemetery but only a few headstones remained. In 1958 the site was cleared and the remaining headstones were lifted and set into a curving rock wall. The site was made into a memorial park which is still there to this day.
All remaining headstones have now been entered and transcribed.
