Add Photos"The town of Confidence was often referred to as Davis Flat which was actually a meadow a mile to the south on Turnback Creek." From CHISPA pages 1337 - 1338.
In the obituary of an early settler, John O. Charter, the cemetery was described as, "...the romantic little cemetery at Davis Flat."
Horace Gideon Kibbee and a partner were the discoverers of the famous Bodie Mine at Bodie in Mono County, California, east of the Sierra Nevada mountians. It was the wish of Horace to be buried in the cemetery at Davis Flat. When he was told that the old fence at this pioneer burying ground had been torn down he resignedly said the City Cemetery of Sonora would suffice. He died at age 95 in Sonora on October 10, 1917. By 1917 there were over 200 remains interred in Davis Flat.
When a subdivision was built mid last century, the cemetery was bulldozed to make way for houses. In 1996 individuals with knowledge of the area said that in fairly recent times the remaining grave stones were removed from the land and placed in a nearby ravine.
This was a Pioneer Cemetery and should not be forgotten.
