The Stratton Hill Road in the Town of Chazy is continuation of the Hay Road. It begins on the east west road running from the shore of Lake Champlain at Monty's Bay and westerly to the Flat Rock.
From the point where the Hay Road ends at the north line of lots 45 and 48 of the Dan patent, the Stratton Road runs slightly southwest to the Beekmantown line, thence on through Beekmantown to Plattsburgh.
It took its name from the Stratton family which came to Plattsburgh from Smithtown, L.I., along with the Platte and Tredwells. The family was in Plattsburgh in 1790.
John Stratton settled in that part of Plattsburgh which became Beekmantown. About 1809 his son,Henry Stratton, became the first settler on this road in the Town of Chazy. He spent his whole lifetime here.
Four of his sons established homes on this road: three of them, Philander, Walter and Edward, all lived between their father's home and the south end of the Hay Road, all in Chazy. The fourth one,Jonas, settled south of his father in the town of Beekmantown. When a school district was laid out
in this section,it was known as the Stratton Hill School District.
On the east side of this road near the south boundary of the town is a small cemetery where Henry Stratton, his wife and some of his children are buried. This is known as the Stratton Hill Cemetery.
The Stratton Estate comprised about 600 acres of land, a wilderness when first occupied. The family did much to clear land and promote settlement along the road.
The name Stratton Hill Road was continuously attached to this road from the earliest days of the town until a few years ago when, in some mysterious and unknown way, it came to be known erroneously as the Ashley Road. Through this
error both the Hay Road and the Stratton Hill Road
have lost their identity.
