Many former slaves came to Linn County, KS after the Civil War and settled in the rural area west of Mound City. African Cemetery was begun by the settlers as a place to inter their loved ones. Today, the cemetery is on private property, and permission must be obtained from the present land owners to go into the cemetery. It has long fallen into disuse and is overgrown. There are at least 25-30 burials there, and possibly more. Most burials either have no markers or native stone markers with no inscription. 3 tombstone markers with names were found and are entered here. The land owners are planning on cleaning up the cemetery to find out approximately how many burials have been made in this cemetery, and to honor the early African-American settlers of Linn County.
