The original Knesset Israel Cemetery was purchased from the Pittsfield Cemetery Corporation. The earliest burial in the Knesset Israel Cemetery section of the Pittsfield Cemetery was in 1897. This area is accessible from the West Gate of the Pittsfield Cemetery.
Beginning in 1925, the new Knesset Israel Cemetery was begun nearby, on Pecks Road. For about 10 years after that, there was some overlap in usage between the two, probably to keep family graves together.
This cemetery has also been referenced as "Kenesseth Israel - Old" (on JewishGen.org). The Kenesseth is reflective of transliteration of other Hebrew pronunciations.
