The village of Arthington was historically placed in the ancient Church of England parish of Adel. Arthington was served by a chapelry of St John the Baptist church in Adel. A priory of Cluniac nuns was located near the village in the mid twelfth century. This thrived until dissolution in 1540. In 1864, a church and churchyard dedicated to St Peter was consecrated at the edge of the village. This continued until the mid 2000s when the congregation declined to a handful, and the church building was declared redundant by the Church of England. It was sold in 2005 and now serves as the St Mary and St Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church.
