Camp Atchison served as the major base camp for the 1863 Sibley Expedition. The camp was abandoned by General Sibley and his troops on August 12, 1863.

Today the site is marked by a field stone monument and an aluminum marker. A small portion of the camp has been preserved, including part of the original rifle pits. The largest part of the camp, including the graves of Private George E. Brent and Private Samuel Wanemaker, can be found on private land across Highway 1.

Permission to visit these graves is required from the property owners.
