Prior to 1941, there were approximately 10 families of Ukrainian descent living in the Minnedosa and surrounding area. Since there was no Ukrainian Catholic Church in the area, they attended mass held at Mountain Road Church.
In the spring of 1941, the families donated a few dollars each towards the construction of their own church. They purchased two lots in the northwest corner of town and plans were made to build a church. It took several years to complete this building as money was scarce.
When plans were first made to build the church it was decided that it be named Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Shortly after the church was started, the parishioners decided to have a cemetery of their own. Three acres (1.21 hectares) of land were purchased to the west side of the Minnedosa Cemetery and here only people who are of Ukrainian descent are buried.

Established in 1948, the cemetery is situated on the west side of the road that separates it from the Minnedosa Cemetery. The archway was erected in 1988 to commemorate the Millenium of Ukrainian Christianity 988-1988 through funds donated by local residents and businesses, as recognized on a plaque attached to west side of the south archway support

A part of the town's story and those of its inhabitants from the early days of European settlement through roughly 1982 is told in the volume "Minnedosa Valley Views", especially starting on page 65. A free digital version of this and many other Manitoba local history books can be found online in the University of Manitoba Digital Collections. There is also a list of such books organized by district and town name on the Manitoba Historical Society's website on their page entitled "Finding Aid: Manitoba Local History Books".
A list of burials in this cemetery is available from the Manitoba Genealogical Society (reference #0873), transcribed by a member or members in NNNN and updated in NNNN. Also available to MGS members is a searchable online database named the "MGS Manitoba Name Index" (or MANI). Some additional information is contained in the 1996 MGS publication "Carved in Stone: Manitoba Cemeteries and Burial Sites" (revised edition, Special Projects Publication, 106 pages).
Additionally, the volume "Ukrainian Catholic Churches of Winnipeg Archeparchy", also freely available online via the U of Manitoba Digital Archives, provides information about the parish, especially starting on page 361 of one book of Volume IV in the set entitled "History of Ukrainian Catholic Churches in Canada".
Additionally, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada (Manitoba Branch) centralizes, curates and makes available extensive records from various groups related to the communities established by the families of Ukrainian descent who settled lived in, died in, or contributed to the story of Manitoba.
