The original cemetery was opened in 1278 as the Saint-Georgs-Friedhof and was soon thereafter renamed to St. Jürgen. This original grave yard no longer exists. In 1675 the city council decided to relocate the cemetery to an area outside the then city walls. This is the site of the current cemetery. Originally known for "poor men burials" it quickly became the cemetery for the entire city of Stralsund. In 1844 the cemetery was enlarged to the west, along the cemetery walls large family plots were created with very ornate and artistic grave monuments. Between 1913 and 1920 the cemetery was enlarged once more. Many victims of both word wars found their final resting places in war grave sections. When in 1945 the Zentralfriedhof Stralsund was opened, the number of annual burials at Sankt-Jürgen-Friedhof drastically went down. As of 1990 the city has decided to close this cemetery. After the period of repose (20 years) for this cemetery the area will be turned into a park. The city has yet to decide what to do with some of the historic monuments.
