This cemetery is a non-denominational and city owned cemetery. Originally opened in 1866 it now also contains a large war grave section, which was formerly known as the Garnisonsfriedhof Müllerstrasse or Kriegsgräberstätte Turiner Strasse. Parts of the cemetery were closed in 1950 and after the period of repose had expired for those graves in 1975 new housing complexes were built on those grounds. The gate to Müllerstrasse was closed, a new entry established at Turiner Strasse (Street). The cemetery then renamed in whole as Friedhof Turiner Strasse. A large war memorial still exists next to the Mourner's Hall or cemetery chapel.

Most German cemeteries have a period of repose of 20-40 years, which means that after about 25 years of a person's death the plot will be re-used. Unless there is family left which purchases another period of repose for a pre-set time. If no one is left the grave will eventually be leveled and re-used. In many German areas the rear structures of sometimes elaborate grave monuments are kept intact, for historical reasons, but the plot itself is being re-used. Since the original occupants and their coffins have naturally decomposed (no poisonous embalming in Germany) the plot is often filled with new urn burials.
