The church was founded in 1771, although the current building was consecrated 22nd September 1847. The graveyard is a hundred feet from the rear of the current church building, between Appleton Village Road, the surgery carpark, and St Bede's primary school. The road is lower than the graveyard, creating an artificial hill, which is walled off above the pavement below. Most of the residents of Widnes seem to have forgotten that the cemetery is there, as it fell into disuse before 1900. There are only 60 gravestones still accessible, 2 of which are illegible. There are probably another dozen overgrown with bramble and holly, making a total of less than 75 stones remaining. Much of the graveyard is now overrun with trees and shrubbery, although a small (largely headstone-free) area is maintained regularly. There are 2 crypts adjacent to the church building, both at the rear, and there are 2 crypts at the far end of the cemetery. There is also a small monument adjacent to the crypts at the rear of the cemetery, the incription on which reads "We beseech thee O Lord to help thy servants whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood and to make them to be numbered with the saints in everlasting glory." To the front of the church is a small monument to the fallen of WWI and WWII. Given the neglected state of the graveyard it is a favourite haunt of local teenagers, and some of the stones have sadly been vandalised.
