The two cemeteries are located within the general area defined by Fairview Avenue on the west, Tallahassee Street on the north, Emmanuel Avenue on the east, and Adams Street on the south. Alabama City Cemetery is located to the south of the old Republic Steel yard (aka Gulf States Steel, LTV Steel). Records for both Oaklawn Cemetery and Alabama City Cemetery are maintained at Forrest Cemetery, 700 South 15th Street, Gadsden, Alabama. The records for both cemeteries may be incomplete as some have been destroyed by fire over the years. Historically, Alabama City Cemetery was for whites, and Oaklawn for African-Americans. In some areas, the lines of demarcation between the two cemeteries may be unclear.
