Search Flint-Tuft Cemetery:

This cemetery is on Business Route 1 (Main St) at the entrance to Round Top Farms in Damariscotta, ME. It is a small piece of privately held land (once owned by the Flint and Tuft families, refer to map of 1813) that has recently had some maintenance including the removal of a massive tree causing damage to stones. Some stones are in very bad shape and some stones are missing.
There are several sources for who is buried there and some stones can still be read. One person whose grave has possibly been obliterated is Dr. Thomas Flint, Revolutionary War surgeon. His burial in that cemetery is documented in the 1950's by Harold Castner. Known as the Castner files. Castner was a well known "historian" in that area, but has sometimes erred in his information.
"Under location #18, which is on Bus. Route 1 less than 100 feet from this cemetery, was the residence of Dr Thomas Flint." The Castner files state, "He, (Dr. Thomas Flint) died and was buried in the little cemetery where there is an entrance driveway to the Round Top Farms and the home of Mr Edward Denney)." His grave (that of Dr. Thomas Flint) may be in this cemetery. The grave of his brother, Deacon Jesse Flint is clearly marked. Dr. Thomas Flint died in 1804 (Town papers signed by Dr. Flint)prior to the first gravestone (1815)in Bethlehem Cemetery. Although burials were preformed prior to 1815 in Bethlehem as bodies were moved from other cemeteries, it is unlikely any burial was that of Dr. Flint as is widely reported. His 2nd wife, Martha Knowlton Kinsman Flint is buried in Bethlehem cemetery, but she lived 42 years longer than Thomas Flint and the cemetery was available at the time of her death.
There are no records that show that Dr. Thomas Flint is in Bethlehem Cemetery. (Refer to the Bethlehem Burying Assoc. Plot Records online at the Damariscotta web site).
There is also a possibility that Dr. Flint is buried in Knowlton-Russ Cemetery since he owned land very near that location. After years of researching his burial, no definite statement of his gravesite can be made.
