FIRST SETTLERS CEMETERY FOUND
Doug Kirkpatrick and his family began clearing an area on their farm on Idaho Street, just a few miles west of La Plata when then uncovered what they though were just a few gravestones. Well, a few turned out to be approximately 30 and they aren't finished yet.
George Morganwick, president of the Macon County Historical Society was excited to view the stones that were dated back to at least 1812. Morganwick believes that the family cemetery belonged to some of the first settlers in the area. Names such as Shores, Reed, Wheeler, Miller, Shropshire and even Enoch Baity 1803-1856 were found in the cemetery. Some of these names were featured in the Sesquicentennial Book recently printed.
The family intends to continue their clean up efforts in the area specified and will report back to The Home Press when finished.

The list of graves "Baity/Shores Cemetery" was compiled by Jane Barnett and Cindy Moore and placed in the La Plata Public Library.
