It is recorded that a church existed at Bewcastle around 1277 built using stones from the nearby Roman fort ruins. The present church was remodelled around 1792 and major repair work was carried out in 1901.
Bewcastle lies near to the Scottish border and during the 14th to the 17th century it was anything but the peaceful scene one finds today, caused by the infamous border reivers.
St Cuthbert's graveyard is the final resting place of the Armstrong, Elliott, Kerr, Nixon and Routledge clans, names of some of the most notable reiver clans.
