Search William Hickson Family Cemetery:

During the Civil War, William T. Hickson, who had enlisted as a private in Company A, 16th Infantry Regiment (Greenville, SC), relocated his wife Martha Ann ("Mattie") and young children from Aiken, South Carolina to Marion County, Florida where they would be safe from General Sherman or other Union encounters. The Hicksons already owned land in the Orange Lake area.

The Hicksons produced turpentine, delivered by mule train. The family's large and ornate house on what is now NW 190th Street in Orange Lake was destroyed in a fire some time in the 1950s or 1960s.

The Hicksons had eight children:
Mary Ann ("Mamie"), born 1860. She married Dr. Franklin Pierce Walker.
Willie, born 1861.
Nora, born 1866. She married Augustus("Gus") Whitney.
Harriet ("Hattie"), born 1867. She married John Burry.
Abbie, born 1868, died days before her second birthday.
Katie, born about 1871, died at the age of 16 or 17.
Louis Tully ("Tully"), born in 1873. He was a justice of the peace and a mayor of McIntosh, Florida (information from his 1918 WWI Draft Registration Card)
Robert Bolling ("Bolling"), born 1877. He married Carrie Belle Spencer of Marietta, Georgia.

Directions: From U.S. Highway 441 just south of Orange Lake, Marion County, Florida:

Go west from U.S. Highway 441 onto NW 185th Street (Pocahontas Avenue). Travel a few hundred yards on NW 185th to the cemetery, which is on the left behind a low wrought iron fence. If you pass a corrugated metal trailer on the left or pass the street sign at NW 57th Court, you missed the cemetery.

The cemetery is just a few feet off the road. It can get very weedy behind the iron fence, so it's easy to miss it if you drive too quickly.
