Cowick Priory (Benedictine) was destroyed during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1538
It had been an alien house: founded in 1144: granted as a cell to Bec-Hellouin by William Fitz-Baldwin; it became denizen: granted to Eton College 1451;
it was then granted to Tavistock after 1464; and was destroyed in 1538 (so that the monks could never return!)
Lord Russell, first built on the site, c1540. There is now a public house, the 'Cowick Barton', on the site, which was converted from a derelict mansion in 1963.
